I learned this a few years ago and I think it is worth while to share.
Part 1 - When we speak to someone. Beyond the words. Do we speak to their 'listening' or we speak our 'values'? Not an easy thing to explain. Let me explain this way. When we speak to a 5-year-old child, how do we speak in order for him to get what you are saying? It is the same thing if you speak on any particular subject to a 40-year-old who is a 5-year-old on the subject matter. Clarity is power. Try it on. Your communication skills will increase. Seek to understand before you need to be understood. :)
Part 2 - When we listen to someone's sharing or talking, beyond the words, do we really listen to them or we listen to our values / experiences etc. We have filters. As a person speaks to us, we tend to make mental pictures, sounds and / or movies so that we can interprete or relate to the person from our 'understanding'. A good practice is to listen as it is first and then repeat what they said in essence to ensure that you understand it like the speaker understood it. This will increase rapport and comprehension.
